WHY

World Hunger Year (WHY) was founded in 1975, by radio talk show host and Executive Director Bill Ayres, and the late singer-songwriter Harry Chapin. It is a not-for-profit registered 501(c)(3) organization focus in fight against hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world.

WHY give it solutions to hunger and poverty by offering job training, education and after school programs; increasing access to housing and healthcare; providing microcredit and entrepreneurial opportunities; teaching people to grow their own food; and assisting small farmers to community based organizations and connect them to funders, media and legislators.

WHY sponsors two major fundraisers each year. Hungerthon is WHY's largest annual public outreach, which is a broadcast during Thanksgiving week to more than 6 million people with essential information about hunger and poverty

What WHY do:
uses its extensive contacts to create networking opportunities for grassroots organizations. For thousands of organizations WHY has helped raise more than $6 million, initiated countless media connections and facilitated meetings with policymakers.

runs the only centralized, nationwide database of innovative organizations working on food, nutrition and agriculture issues across the country.

works at the U.N. (where we hold official NGO status) to increase food security at the national and international levels. We publish information and influence policy on sustainable agriculture, microcredit and community-building.

helps students understand the root causes of hunger and poverty, and to empower them to make a difference. WHY offers teacher consultation, a curriculum guide, an award-winning web site and a quarterly newsletter.

forges relationships between artists and grassroots organizations to raise funds and public awareness. We make it easy for artists to support social causes by matching them with our network organizations. In 1999 WHY raised more than $1.5 million in concert-related donations for 225 organizations.
