Margo (Street Musician)
My name is Margo. I’m 13 years old. I come from Yogyakarta. I live in Alun-Alun (near the palace of Yogyakarta). I sleep every day in the small stage in the Alun-Alun. I live alone because my parents have all died. So I become a street musician for my self. Every day I do my job in the streets, in bus, from store to store, recreational places, and many other. I do not school, because I do not have any money to pay school fee.


The result from being a street musician about Rp 25.000,00 per day. But sometimes I do not get money at all. From these, I use the money to buy food. I usually eat at the small restaurant. Sometimes there is someone who’s kind to me, I was given a box of rice which is the food is tastes good. If there is money remaining from my job, I save money if there are other purposes. Every day, I play with Bagas. Bagas is my friend and he is also a beggar. I never play with any kids another Bagas, because I only know Bagas.

Every Sunday morning, I and Bagas always go to the University of Gajah Mada because every Sunday morning there is a kind of market in the area throughout the campus. In many stall sell clothes, slippers, shoes, bed linen, pillows, a variety of accessories and various other goods. In addition, many people selling food from the milk, bread, fuel, food for the breakfast in the market. There are also people who exercise in the University of Gajah Mada area. Bagas and I went to the place the bus ride. We start to do the job and start to play music tool that we carry from one kiosk to another kiosk, looking for a kind-hearted people who want to give a little money they have for us.

 

Bagas (Street Musician)
My name is Bagas. I’m 10 years old. I am a street musician. I come from Jakarta. I live with my father at the Alun-Alun (near the palace of Yogyakarta). Every day, my father and I slept in front of the herbal medicine shops in the area of Alun-Alun. I do not school, because my father does not have any money to bring me to school. Street musician is job that I want to do to fulfil every day’s needs and help my father. Every day I do my job with Margo. Margo being a friend of mind after I arrived in the city of Yogyakarta. Every day we play together. I always go to anywhere with Margo.

We do the job from the streets, in bus, from shops to shops, food stalls, places of recreation, and many other. Money that I got from this job, I use to buy food and the rest I give to my father to buy other purposes. Usually, I can earn around Rp 25.000,00. However, if unlucky, I'm earn nothing.

Just as Margo, every Sunday morning I went to the University of Gajah Mada to be a street musician there. Money that we earn from this job in the area of the campus is quite a lot because there so many people want to give a little money for us. Revenue from this job is collected to add our pocket money. Margo and I hope a later time we can feel how beautiful school and play with many friends. Hopefully, God listens to our prayers.

 

Lastri (Beggar)
My name is Lastri. I’m 54 years old. I have husband and 4 children. I come from Wonosobo (a city in Central Java). I live in Sagan (near the University of Gajah Mada). My husband work as a paddycab driver. My first son is studying at the University of Gajah Mada with a scholarship from the campus. Then the otrhers live with their aunt in Wonosobo. My second child is school in one of the Junior High School in Wonosobo. My other children are still small and they have not been to school.

Every day I beg in the streets, from shop to shop, in the food-stalls, in the markets, and in other places. Beside being a beggar, I also collect second hand goods trash and then I sell them to get money. Money that I earn every day, is about Rp 30.000,00.

The money that I collected with my husband to pay our every day’s needs and the rest we collect to pay our children’s school fee. Beside that, every month my husband and I go home to Wonosobo with bus to look in my children and checking their progress.

I often alone when I collect second hand goods and begging, because I do not know too many other beggar. Every Sunday morning, if I'm not home to Wonosobo, I always to the University of Gajah Mada to beg the people who come to the area. The results are also quite a lot. I collect the money for me and my family.
